Rulers of Jerusalem Face Imminent Destruction
A bitter wind blows across the limestone ridges of eighth-century b.c. Judah. Civic leaders strip the peasantry of their meager wheat harvests and stone dwellings. Micah compares these ruling elites to butchers who flay skin and crack bones. The agrarian lower classes face crushing taxes and forced labor to fund royal building projects.
Micah directs his fierce primary oracle at the fortified capital of Jerusalem. This walled urban enclosure sits at an elevation of 2,500 feet above the Mediterranean Sea. The civic center thrives on an economy of bribery and judicial corruption. Local priests demand silver shekels to render favorable legal verdicts for wealthy landowners.
The geographic focus of the prophecy rests heavily on the elevated Temple Mount complex. Royal builders construct thick retaining walls using massive quarried limestone ashlar blocks. Micah declares that this sacred summit will soon become an overgrown forest thicket. The iron siege tools of foreign armies will eventually reduce the masonry to rubble.
Therefore because of you Zion shall be plowed like a field, Jerusalem shall become heaps of ruins, and the mountain of the temple like the bare hills of the forest.
The God of Israel refuses to answer the frantic prayers of these corrupt magistrates. The false prophets who envision military peace will soon face absolute and terrifying darkness. The sun sets over the terraced hills without bringing any new divine vision. A thick agricultural silence settles over the doomed stone structures of the capital city.
