Second Heavenly Council and Physical Affliction

The heavenly assembly reconvenes before the Almighty to evaluate human loyalty. The Accuser returns from walking across the earth and insists that physical suffering will break human integrity. The Almighty permits a second harsh test but strictly forbids taking his life.

The narrative remains fixed in the ancient land of Uz. Historians place this territory near southern Edom during the second millennium b.c. This arid region featured broad plains and scattered pastoral settlements. Travelers navigated hundreds of miles across harsh desert terrain to reach this isolated location.

Severe boils erupt across the victim from his head to his feet. He retreats to a public ash heap located just outside the local settlement. This refuse mound served as an unofficial quarantine zone for the diseased. He uses a broken piece of fired clay pottery to scrape his ruined skin. His wife demands that he abandon his faith, but he firmly refuses.

Shall we receive good at the hand of God, and shall we not receive evil?

Three distant friends hear of this sudden ruin and travel along regional trade routes to offer comfort. They arrive but cannot recognize the disfigured man sitting among the ashes. They tear their woven cloaks and throw coarse dirt into the air above their heads. The men sit on the ground in total silence for seven days and seven nights.
